What Is Industrial Grease?
Grease is a semi-solid lubricant made of three main components:
- Base Oil (≈80–90%) – provides the core lubrication, separating metal surfaces under load and motion to reduce friction and wear.
- Thickener (≈10–15%) – acts like a sponge that gives the grease its structure and holds the oil in place.
- Additives – enhance performance and protect metal against rust, corrosion, and oxidation.
Grease vs. Oil: What’s the Difference?
Grease
- Behavior: Stays in place without flowing easily.
- Best for: Low-to-medium speeds, hard-to-reach lubrication points, and sealed-for-life bearings.
- Maintenance: Requires less frequent relubrication.
- Protection: Helps seal out dust, moisture, and water splashes.
Oil
- Behavior: Flows freely and can recirculate through machinery.
- Best for: Very high-speed applications requiring continuous cooling and heat transfer.
- Maintenance: Often requires a circulation system.
- Protection: Provides lubrication but offers limited sealing against contaminants.
Understanding NLGI Consistency Grade
NLGI (National Lubricating Grease Institute) grade describes how firm or soft a grease is, measured by cone penetration in a standard lab test the lower the penetration number, the harder the grease.
- NLGI 2 – soft-to-medium consistency, the most common grade for general-purpose lubrication.
- NLGI 3 – firmer consistency, offering excellent stay-in-place performance, resistance to displacement, and strong sealing support in rolling bearings and chassis points.
Common Thickener Types
Lithium
Balanced Performance and Protection
Offers good mechanical stability and water resistance, with a typical operating temperature range of -20°C to +120°C, depending on the grease formulation.
Best for: General-purpose industrial applications and automotive use.
Calcium
Excellent Water Resistance
Provides good resistance to water and moisture, making it a suitable option for many wet environments.
Best for: Equipment exposed to water and moisture, and cost-conscious applications.
Polyurea & Lithium Complex
For High Temperatures and Heavy-Duty Operation
Specialized formulations can provide reliable performance at elevated temperatures and during continuous operation, depending on the product specifications.
Best for: Bearings and applications requiring long grease life and high-temperature performance.
Typical Applications
- Rolling bearings in machinery and motors
- Automotive chassis points, joints, and bushings
- Conveyors, fans, and electric motors under normal service conditions
When to Use Grease Instead of Oil
- Low-to-medium speed applications
- Equipment needing long-term protection from dust, water, or contamination
- Hard-to-reach points where frequent relubrication isn’t practical (sealed-for-life bearings)
Storage & Handling Tips
- Store sealed in a cool, dry, clean place, away from direct sunlight and ignition sources.
- Keep containers closed when not in use to avoid contamination with dirt or water.
- Apply sufficient grease and ensure clean surfaces before operation to prevent direct friction and premature wear.

Frequently Asked Questions
NLGI 2 is softer and more common for general-purpose lubrication; NLGI 3 is firmer and stays in place better under certain bearing conditions.
It offers a practical balance of mechanical stability, water resistance, and a wide operating temperature range, making it suitable for most general industrial and automotive applications.
When the application runs at low-to-medium speed, needs long-term protection from contamination, or is hard to reach for frequent relubrication.
